Linda Miller

Ever since I can remember I have sewn and drawn. My Mum taught me how to use an ancient Frister and Rossman hand cranked sewing machine when I was eight, I combined the two mediums and I have never looked back.

Now further down my creative journey I work from the Sorting Office Studios in Eastleigh, Hampshire, and I make one-off, framed and unframed Machine Embroideries using an industrial Bernina 950 sewing machine. I create embroideries which contain figures set in the outdoors, always smiling and usually depicted within a story.

I have admired the skill of quilt making but I have always been daunted by the “maths” that I imagined accompanied the structure of a quilt, no matter how many makers told me it didn’t have to be like that I wasn’t convinced, however it never stopped me buying yet more fabric to add to my fabric stash. Then in early 2016 I spent the weekend with two friends, one of which is a very talented and accomplished quilt maker and she showed me how to make a machine pieced random strip quilt top. Suddenly I was free and I had found a technique that suited me. In the following winter evenings I spent my time hand quilting it, and loving every moment, I am now working on my sixth quilt and already thinking about the colour scheme for my next!
For me it’s all about stitch and colour, the placing of colour, the way in which colours react and work together, and the pure delight of the rhythm of stitch whether it’s by machine or hand I can never get enough.

I know how lucky I am to sew all day and all evening.

I am always interested in new ways and opportunities to work with fellow quilters and stitch enthusiasts. I teach free machine embroidery and give workshops and talks to groups and guilds as well as selling and exhibiting my machine embroideries. Whether you'd like to discuss one of my classes or have me visit your guild or group you can find my contact details below.
