Congratulations to Region 6 YQ members Francesca Laursen, Freya Ramsey, Sophie Pierce, Maddie Sparks and Beth Austin whose Sunflower Magic quilt has been selected for the Generation Art touring exhibition. The girls were all part of Gilly Mac Designs Senior Sewing Group led by Quilters’ Guild member Gill Towell. The exhibition will be shown in four major venues in 2015 - 16: Turner Contemporary in Margate, New Walk Museum and Art Gallery and Soft Touch Arts in Leicester, and Quay Artsin Newport on the Isle of Wight. The Sunflower Magic quilt will be the only textile piece of art in the exhibition.
The piece was made for the Festival of Quilts in 2014 where the theme was ‘In My Garden’. The Young Quilters (who were all 12/13 years old at the time) pixilated the sunflower image themselves, chose the fabric colours and designed the piece, as well as learning how to long arm quilt.
The biggest challenge was the quilting because the piece is large. ‘We took it to a local long arm quilter who taught the girls how to McTavish over the quilt and add circles (like seeds) in the middle,’ says Gill Towell.
The incredibly proud girls have now sent their quilt off. The girls commented, ‘It was a lot of hard work, but so much fun to be a part of. We are delighted with the final result.’
The Quilters’ Guild also submitted individual quilts made by YQ members Grace Francombe Gibson (Region 3), Darci Reeves (Region 5) and Jessica Howden (Region 14). The exhibition organisers hope to feature their quilts as part of the Generation ART digital gallery and resource to launch later this year.
